How To Make Your Porch Full of Personality This Winter

It seems natural to want to dress up our houses. During the winter your front door and porch is the focal point of your home. I think decorating a front porch for winter is exciting. As the leaves or snow cover what was once a colorful landscaping, you have dress up your house to give it personality.

It brings me so much joy to drive down the driveway and be welcomed with a cheerfully decorated porch with lots of personality. The possibilities are endless. Here, I will share a few tips to consider with beautiful photos from Mark Williams Studio of a porch my sister and I decorated at the Simmons family home.

1. DETERMINE HOW LONG THE DECORATIONS WILL BE UP

If the decor will change often then you can go for more dramatic options as you can delve into holiday specific options like New Year's Day and Valentine's Day. Typically holiday decorations are bolder and splashy.

Conversely, if you would like simply celebrate the coziness of winter and skip the hassle of refreshing the decor then go for something more versatile.

2. CHOOSE LASTING MATERIALS

If you choose wisely the display can stay upon throughout the winter season. Selecting basic materials like pine cones and plants can go a long way in the versatilely of your decor.

I prefer to use natural materials like foraged pine, fir, birch and other winter greens. You can also use faux greenery and stems. You can gather things like logs, or air plants that can be placed about the space on the front porch. Natural baskets and lanterns that look organic in the space are another comfy touch.

3. USE A PLAN

The easiest way to decorate is with a visualization of the final display. Choose a color or theme or style to give you a guide and streamline your approach. It doesn't take a lot of know-how to develop cohesion. Cohesion looks inviting and

4. BE RESOURCEFUL

Use things that you have in storage or can easily obtain through foraging or picking up at the store. Personally, I am not attracted to designs that look too fussy and store-bought. Even when mine are -- I find myself trying to dumb them down to look effortless. If you feel creative dry a DIY project or use something a family member has made.

Branches from nearby trees, berries off a bush or containers and lanterns from storage are great for a winter them that is easy on the piggy bank. The best decorations are those that make you happy and proud.

WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN TO PUT A WREATH ON YOUR DOOR?

Historically, wreaths are symbols of victory and celebration. Over time they have  become a hallmark of classic holiday décor. If you know me, you know that I love circles and believe it or not, when it comes to wreaths there is more than a shape to that plain old circle on the door.

A circle shape symbolizes unity, wholeness, continuity, and focus. The first  records of wreaths date back to the ancient Greeks and Romans at around 150 BC. People would wear wreaths as headdresses using fresh tree leaves, twigs, small fruits and flowers. They represented status, occupation and achievement. In fact, the word, “wreath” literally means, “that which is wound around,” and is derived from the Old English word, “wrioa.”
